Paid Leave Begins May 1st
This morning the sun was warming the sidewalk and a bevy of birds were talking amongst themselves in the hedges. These are positive changes we are feeling.
Another positive change to feel good about begins on May 1st.
That is when Maine’s Paid Family & Medical Leave benefits will begin!
This law came about through the advocacy of several organizations that make up the Maine Paid Leave Coalition including the Maine State Breastfeeding Coalition among many others. Employers and employees had been able to submit descriptions of how Paid Leave would impact their lives. These testimonies, in part, informed the policy’s formation. In addition, other successful paid leave programs and national unemployment benefits were templates for Maine’s law, carefully reviewed by the Paid Family & Medical Leave Authority.
Applications for Paid Leave opened on April 1, 2026.
The process begins thirty days before you need a leave. Put your request in writing to your employer and submit an application with AFLAC. Your employer should already be connected to the Maine Paid Family & Medical Leave program. Otherwise, you can direct them to the Employer page on the Paid Leave website.
This program provides 12 weeks of paid time for several situations:
• Medical: for your needs, including being an organ donor.
• Parental: caring for your child(ren).
• Family care: caring for your elderly parent or relative, including domestic partners and extended family.
• Military family: preparing for deployment.
• Safety: securing a place in order to leave abuse and/or violence.
Both employers and employees contribute to the fund, much like we do with unemployment. Both began paying into the fund in January 2025. By May 1, 2026, this fund will be solvent and benefits will begin.
The maine.gov website is a well-organized, up to date resource. (I found outdated websites that state there is no paid leave policy. The fact is Paid Family & Medical Leave is the law in Maine in 2026.) This resource will explain how and when to apply for your relevant leave time.
The Guidance and Resources pages are available in eight languages.
Arabic • English • French •Haitian/Creole

Twelve weeks allows time necessary for recovery, caring, preparing … all for a better work/life balance. This benefits the health and economies of families as well as employers.
Paid Family and Medical Leave improves maternal and child health, boosts worker retention and increases productivity at work. That is a step to reduce poverty and improve lives.
This May 1st, 2026, along with the sun and birds, we can also feel good about Maine’s Paid Family and Medical Leave.
