Learning Objectives
Confidently assess functional feeding deficits, distinguishing between coordinated and uncoordinated reflexive suckling, and identify compensatory behaviors in the infant.
Clarify the IBCLC’s role in evaluating oral restrictions, and make timely, appropriate referrals to pediatricians, SLPs, bodyworkers, and release providers.
Conduct a structured, evidence-based evaluation of the breastfeeding dyad, using real-life video and photo demonstrations to support clinical application.
Deliver individualized, family-centered care, determining optimal timing for interventions and ensuring coordinated follow-up across disciplines.
Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how to perform a functional evaluation of the breastfeeding dyad, develop greater confidence in identifying movement deficits in the lips, tongue, and cheeks of a reflexively feeding infant, and learn to coordinate care with complementary providers to support families through a collaborative, team-based approach.
